LARGE YACHT HELIDECK SAFETY TRAINING (LYHST) HLO COURSE

AIIA ONLINE course - AUD $1,250.00* (ex GST)

Course Overview

The Large Yacht Helideck Safety Training (LYHST) HLO course equips yacht crew and aviation support personnel with the critical knowledge, skills, and confidence required to manage helicopter operations safely at sea. Delivered in alignment with the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) syllabus (Version 4.2), the program combines internationally recognised best practice from CAP 437, the REG Yacht Code, and industry standards to address the unique challenges of shipboard aviation.

Operating helicopters aboard large yachts presents complex risks — from limited deck space and vessel movement to fuel hazards and emergency preparedness. This course provides a structured approach to managing those risks through theory-based instruction, case studies, and practical insights.

By the end of training, participants will be prepared to operate as competent members of a helideck team, contributing effectively to safe helicopter landing, refuelling, firefighting, and emergency response.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe helideck team structures and safety responsibilities.

  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with helicopter deck operations.

  • Apply standard procedures for landing, take-off, loading, and passenger handling.

  • Demonstrate safe, compliant procedures for helicopter refuelling.

  • Operate firefighting systems and respond to aviation fire scenarios.

  • Carry out fuel sampling, testing, and accurate documentation.

  • Lead and participate in helideck emergency response, including crash and evacuation drills.

  • Uphold compliance with CAP 437, REG Yacht Code, JIG, and other relevant standards.

Course Structure

The LYHST HLO course is delivered in four integrated modules:

  1. Helideck Procedures & Emergency Response

    • Team organisation, helicopter familiarisation, deck preparation, communications, and emergency scenarios.

  2. Helideck Fire Fighting

    • Aviation fire hazards, firefighting systems and PPE, emergency drills, and fire watch during refuelling.

  3. Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) / Helideck Assistant (HDA) Duties

    • Pre-arrival planning, leadership, communications, passenger and cargo handling, Dangerous Goods awareness, and post-incident reporting.

  4. Helicopter Refuelling

    • Fuel properties and hazards, storage systems, grounding and bonding, cold and hot refuelling, contamination checks, and spill/emergency response.

Target Audience

This course is intended for:

  • Helicopter Landing Officers (HLOs)

  • Helideck Assistants (HDAs)

  • Deck crew with aviation support duties

  • Yacht Captains, Chief Officers, and Bosuns overseeing aviation operations
