Aim and Objectives

The aim of the HERTM Refresher Course is to reinforce the knowledge, understanding, and practical response skills required to perform the role of a Helideck Emergency Response Team Member (HERTM) effectively and safely in an offshore environment.

This refresher training ensures that personnel acting as Helideck Assistants (HDAs) maintain ongoing competence in helideck emergency response, hazard recognition, equipment handling, and coordinated action during helicopter-related incidents on both attended and Normally Unattended Installations (NUIs).

Who Should Enrol in This Course?

This course is designed for personnel currently acting as Helideck Assistants (HDAs) who:

  • Hold a valid Helideck Operations Initial Training (HOIT) certificate, and

  • Possess an existing HERTM certificate that is due to expire.

This OPITO-equivalent refresher course provides a recognised method of renewing HERTM certification without the need to undertake the full HERTM course again.

What Are the Benefits for Attendees?

  • A cost-effective and time-efficient option for maintaining HERTM certification

  • Reinforcement of key responsibilities, helideck operations, and emergency roles

  • Familiarisation with the latest amendments to UKCAA CAP 437 and current Industry Best Practice

  • Ongoing compliance with operator and regulatory certification requirements

  • Ensures safety assurance for operating companies through continual crew competence

  • Accessible online delivery allows for flexible scheduling and minimal disruption to roster cycles

What Does the Course Cover?

This online refresher course, aligned with OPITO-equivalent standards, provides the acting HDA with a practical and updated overview of offshore helideck emergency response roles. It focuses on real-world application, teamwork, and system knowledge necessary for safe helicopter operations on offshore installations.

More specifically, the course includes but is not limited to:

  • Rescue and fire-fighting systems and their effective deployment

  • Identification and control of potential helideck and helicopter hazards

  • Helideck crew roles, including coordinated emergency duties and responsibilities

  • Emergency response requirements for operations on Normally Unattended Installations (NUIs)

  • Communication protocols and structured team response procedures
