REFRESHER HELIDECK EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM LEADER (HERTL RF) COURSE PROFILE

HERTL RF ONLINE course - AUD$600*

The aim and objectives of HERTL REFRESHER training is to equip the candidate with the initial knowledge, understanding and skills required to perform the roles of offshore Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO)  safely and effectively.

Who should enrol in this course?

Any person currently acting as HLO  with a valid HOIT certificate and a current HERTL certificate that is due to expire. This course is OPITO equivalent and is a means of renewing HERTL certification without having to undergo the full HERTL training.

What are the benefits for attendees?

  • The HERTL Refresher training is a shortened, and less expensive, means of renewing HERTL certification.
  • The HERTL will be reminded of basic structures, operations and legal standards of helidecks and helicopter landing requirements.
  • The latest amendments to all aspects of UKCAA CAP 437 and Industry Best Practice will be drawn to attention.
  • The operating company will have continuous valid certification of their crew members, which is vital for all aspects of safety operations and insurance requirements.

What the Course Provides

This OPITO-equivalent online refresher course delivers acting Helicopter Landing Officers (HLOs) with a structured and current understanding of helideck emergency response leadership. It reinforces core competencies and responsibilities related to helicopter operations on both attended and Normally Unattended Installations (NUIs).

Participants will revisit key regulatory, procedural, and practical knowledge required to lead helideck emergency response teams, with emphasis on hazard identification, crew coordination, communication under pressure, and leadership during critical phases of helicopter movement and emergency scenarios.

The course is designed to ensure HLOs remain competent, confident, and aligned with industry best practices and organisational expectations for offshore helideck safety and emergency readiness.

What the Course Covers

The course includes, but is not limited to:

  • Refresher knowledge of HLO legal responsibilities and industry guidance

  • Leadership principles and command structure during helideck emergencies

  • Emergency preparedness for attended and unattended facilities

  • Helideck risk management and hazard recognition techniques

  • Effective communication and crew coordination under duress

  • Helideck emergency systems, equipment, and firefighting media

  • Role and use of breathing apparatus in helideck scenarios

  • Search and rescue (SAR) techniques for helideck operations

  • Emergency response procedures for helicopter incidents including engine fires, undercarriage collapse, or rotor strikes

  • Considerations for various helicopter types and their associated risks

  • Securing and safety procedures for helicopters post-landing or during emergencies

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and HLO safety responsibilities

  • Practical case studies and scenario-based decision making

This course is tailored for active HLOs requiring a formal refresher that meets internal assurance requirements and aligns with international benchmarks for offshore helideck safety leadership.
